Harry Haag, again demonstrates that he is one of the top notch elephant trainers of the world. His elephants, big and little,  have been here before but never with the repertoire of tricks they have this year.  Miss Ruby Fisher, who handles the beasts as easily as she does her dogs in another act, brought gasps from the stands as she permitted the bigger of the elephants to carry her about the ring in her mouth.  Judy, the smaller not only walks the tight wire and  a 6 by 6 plank, but turns around on the plank with a pirouette a ballet dancer would envy.
(Bismarck Tribune, North Dakota 3-27-1940)

Wave of Accidents at Circus Ominous, Girl Trapeze Performer Falls and elephant Bruises Another Girl Star,
Who will be next?  That's what Bismarck Elks circus performers were wondering Friday as a wave of accidents that started with the very first performance in the World War Memorial building here Tuesday continued through Thursday's performances.  Hurtling off a high trapeze Thursday afternoon, Miss Vivian Nelson, a member of the aerial ballet, escaped broken bones but bruised and scratched herself.  In the evening, Miss Ruby Fisher, a mite of a woman who bravely allows her elephants to virtually manhandle her, was mauled by Judy, the baby elephant, as Miss Fisher lay on the floor while Judy stepped across her.  Gordon Smith, animal trainer whose hand was badly lacerated by a rhesus monkey Wednesday, was under opiates Thursday. Although he was running a temperature, his physician told him they believed he will escape infection. Bus Owens, one of the three Olympia boys who sprained a wrist during the high trapeze act Tuesday, was fit again.  Miss Nelson was balancing her body on the swinging trapeze without support of either hands or feet when she slipped and fell to the memorial building floor. The fact that she landed on her buttocks probably saved her from breaking bones. While few spectators realized that Miss Fisher was in danger, Harry Haag, Elephant trainer, explained that an elephant can easily crush a human with one slow movement of it's trunk or feet.  Remaining performances of the circus will be at 8:15 Friday and Saturday. If necessary, Gil Gray impresariom announced, there will be two matinees Saturday afternoon. Bismarck and Mandan school children will be Saturday matinee guests.
(Bismarck Tribune, N. Dakota 3-29-1940)

Like Any Man, Elephants Can Be Tamed by Feeding, Feed elephants when you train them and pet dogs is the advice of Mrs. H.E. Haag, wife of the owner of the Elks circus animals. Dressing for the act Wednesday in a a make shift dressing room behind the circus ring backdrop with other girls in the show milling around in various stages of dress and undress, Mrs. Haag told Tribune reporters of her work with dogs and elephants. Daughter of a circus family, she started her show career early. An expert aerialist, she did loop walking last year when the Elks show was in Bismarck. Assisting her in training her two elephants has been Charles Duncan, who has been with the animals since Alice, the mother, was born about 38 or 40 years ago. Judy, baby of the show is almost four years old. For her elephant act Mrs. Haag is billed as Miss Fisher. Judy, she says, sometimes balks when she walks the plank. At Mt. Vernon, finding it a little wobbly and excited by the presence of a band near by, Judy all by jumped through the band. Elephant training starts when the animals are about two years old, before that their backs are too weak. is it difficult? According to Mrs. Haag, no! All you have to do, she claims, is to let the elephant know you're boss and you're well on your way toward a good act. Bread and bananas are the favorite rewards given for a good performance. Life the elephants, the dogs of the circus have been with the show since they were born. There are seven in the act, fox terriers, one spitz and two "just dogs." Mrs. Haag, who is Miss Ruby when in the ring with her dogs, is partial to the spitz for a dog act, but says the terriers are equal in intelligence. The oldest is five years old. Both males and females are used. They love it, according to the trainer. Showing off before a crowd is real meat to them. The dogs start in training when about five months old. animals of the two acts are kept completely separate. Equally enthusiastic about them is Naomi Haag, 5 year old daughter of the Haags, who was seated all by herself low in the bleachers when the reporters went by. She was watching the clown with as much interest as if she hasn't seen him a hundred times before. "When I get big, mother," she tells Mrs. Haag, "I'm going to learn to walk the loops - then you won't have to work any more!" Naomi already has picked up tricks from the show folk but will really enter training for the big tent when she reaches her 6th birthday. She wandered in and out of the dressing room as her mother got into her costume. Seated on the table was another youngster, the baby of one of the aerialists, who cooed and smiled at the world at large as happily as if tucked in a buggy.  One of the girls told The Tribune reporters that she'd broken three ribs and an ankle in her aerial act. Did she leave the show? Of course not! She loves it and so stayed to take tickets. The next season she was back on the trapeze again.

Elephants at Grotto Circus go on Rampage in Public Hall
It all started when one of the keepers took two of the elephants to Brookside zoo to return a mate, Trixie, to the circus. Trixie was loaned to the zoo two years ago by the circus and she was to resume her place in the elephant act this afternoon. The other elephants set up an ear splitting trumpeting and finally broke down their fences and ran wild in the basement of the hall.

11-15-1942  Harry Haag, manager of Fisher's Elephants at Medora, Indiana, and his
elephant handler, Corena - arrived Saturday night at the Claude Krieg farms in Huntington
County to assist Modoc's would-be capturers. Modoc broke for freedom on Wednesday in Wabash, Indiana.
...Since Wednesday, when she made her break for freedom and tramped confusedly through the streets of Wabash, Ind., Damaging a home and a drug store, she has been on the verge of capture many times. Friday, surrounded by farmers, she injured one of them. Kenneth Kindley, 38, when he tripped while running from her. Modoc rolled over him accidentally and physicians gave him a 50-50 chance to live. Terrel Jacobs, Modoc's owner and trainer, said he was afraid her frequent baths in the Wabash and Salamonie Rivers would give her pneumonia. Farmers throughout the vicinity were afraid they wouldn't.
(Hammond Times, Indiana 11-15-1942)

Harry Haag, manager of Fisher Elephant Farm, Medora, Ind. volunteered to help capture Modoc with the aid of one of the farm's bull elephants.  According to the plan, Corina, Haag's huge assistant, would ride the bull into close quarters with Modoc. The man would try to loop a chain about the hunted animal and the bull would pull her to a position where she could be herded into a truck.  Modoc was lured out of a thicket for a few minutes when Corina fed her several dozen loaves of bread.  The elephant trainer placed a strap about Modoc while she ate.  She endured the strap quietly until consuming the bread., then broke it easily and lumbered back into the thicket.  Raymond Dukes, a former elephant trainer, who came here from his home at Ora, Ind., suggested she be fed bread.  Dukes fed her several dozen loaves of bread, gave her some hay, petted her and finally just lopped his hook around her ear and said, "Come on Modoc."  Modoc ambled peaceably over to a truck and after watching two other elephants enter trucks she walked in without a sign of resistance. One man was injured earlier in the hunt.
(Hammond Times, Indiana 11-16-1942)

Ruby and Harry were visiting Terrell Jacobs at the time. The elephants had stampeded in the town and went out in the woods. Harry and Corine went up to Peru to offer help to get the elephants back to Jacob's farm.

Ruby Haag - Miss Ruby's Dogs
Naomi - age 10, trained black Cocker Spaniel
Sonny Moore - Dogs

Miss Ruby, who has trained dogs since she was 9 and has had her own dog act since she was 12, prefers female to male dogs in her act. They are more easily trained and more affectionate, she said. She has worked with elephants, horses and most other animals used in circuses, but prefers dogs because they are smarter and more responsive, she said. In rehearsals, she added, the dogs will go through their work perfectly but when the music is on and a crowd is around them they will slide out of their routine if they choose to because they know that on a split-second program you haven't the time to make them toe the mark.

The Haags and Moore agree that dogs for circus acts must be treated like children, too much discipline will make a dog refuse to take pleasure in its work and a dog that does not like his stuff is useless in the show business.

Miss Ruby and Her Pets, Miss Ruby shows the worth of the true circus background in her expert handling of the 15 odd canine performers known as Ruby's  Pets. "All about the dogs" is the phrase that best describes Ruby's toy town terriers and their uncanny ability to clown perform and in general disprove the belief that animals are dumb, because this noted trainer has created a dog act than which there is nothing better. With the Braly Circus grandstand attractions.

Five elephants still were stomping around on an ice-covered loading platform this morning, refusing to get on board a specially constructed circus freight car. The ruckus started when it was found the railroad car the pachyderms were to travel in ahd a broken door. The animals, used to tropical climates, would be endangered riding in a draft. So the handlers tried to move them into another car. The elephants, seven of which were in the first freight car, began acting up when they slipped around on the ice. Four were finally wheeled into the second car. Up to early this morning, the other five were still loudly protesting the switch. The rest of the Al Sirat Grotto circus train left before midnight. The elephants, it is hoped, will be on their way to winter quarters at Sarasota, Fla. at noon today.

A winch and much shoving got Minnie, the balky elephant, aboard a train for Florida Monday. A fall on the ice Sunday night while a circus car was being loaded caused Minnie's stubbornness and held up the shipment of 14 elephants for 18 hours. The animals had been performing in the AL Sirat Grotto circus here and were being taken to winter quarters at Sarasota Fla.

11-12-1957  Harry Haag Sr. dies (56 years old)
Obituary in Billboard 11-18-1957 issue

Harry Haag, 56, circus performer and trainer, died at a hospital in Columbus Indiana on November 12th. He had been ailing for some time, but had expected to be with the Davenport Shrine dates.

Funeral services were at Brownstown, Indiana, near the family home at Medora, Indiana on November 15th.

Haag was the son of Ernest Haag, who had the Mighty Haag Circus, and he was named for Harry "Shorty" Rhodes, who was with that show from its start. Growing up on the circus, Haag stepped into many jobs with it and spent most of his time there until the 1930's.

After the Haag show closed, he worked the Haag elephants at fairs, parks, Shrine shows and other circuses. Twice he operated his own winter shows. A few seasons ago he went to South America for the Circus Royal Dumbar. Selling his remaining elephant there, Haag came back to the U.S. to concentrate on dog and pony acts, which his wife and daughter worked. He was with Orrin Davenport about 17 years as a performer and superintendent of transportation.

Surviving are his widow, Ruby, and a daughter, Naomi, both of Medora, and who continue the dog and pony act; two sons, Charles, who is in the navy; and Harry Jr., who has been with Polack Bros. Circus; an uncle, Harley Hubbard, formerly with the Haag Show and now in Shreveport Louisiana, and a sister, Mrs. Helen Haag Hayes, who has Haag Chimpanzees.

An agreement was reported tonight to have united two of the nation's largest circuses - Cristiani Brothers and Ringling Bros and Barnum and Bailey. Under terms of the agreement, according to the Sarasota Herald Tribune, Ringling will follow a North American schedule while Cristiani will use some Ringling equipment and tour parts of South America. "We are very much pleased," said Ernesto (Poppa) Cristiani, 80 year old patriarch of the family which performed with the Ringling show for many years before going out on its own. Daviso Cristiani, second in command to Poppa, negotiated the agreement with John Ringling North, president of Ringling Bros, and Art Concello, vice president and general manager. The Herald Tribune said Cristiani has about 500 artists and workingmen and the Ringling show will provide new costumes and other assistance. Ringling has operated in auditoriums and arenas since 1956 while Cristiani is one of the largest circuses still under canvas. Both circuses will retain their identities, the newspaper said.
