Flying Wallendas insisted on performing in the Grotto Circus although the
week previous two Wallendas had been killed
and Karl Wallendas son, Mario, paralyzed for life
1955 - Karl Wallenda carried Herman Pirchner, Cleveland restaurateur, across
high wire on shoulders
1968 - Jon "Tarzan" Zerbini - Lion Tamer required 500 stitches
saved by his father who distracted the attention of the lion with a club
His father was lacerated by the lion and suffered a heart attack. He already had
a wooden leg because
of a lion attack
WWII era - Ruby Haag fell during a performance and suffered a
fractured pelvis and was disabled for life
1959 - a lion tamer, Captain Keller was married in the lions' cage, with Grotto
officials acting
as members of the wedding party
